Build or buy a sales list? | Why ¥0.1-per-entry lists don't work
Sales list prices range from ¥0.1 to ¥20 per entry
The unit price of a business list is not set by vendor; the price range depends on what is actually being sold. Even the same "1,000-entry list" can be a completely different thing.
| Price range | Typical contents | Best suited for |
|---|---|---|
| ¥0.1–1 per entry | Bulk sales from an existing database, sold in lots of tens of thousands. Mainly company name, address and main phone number | High-volume telemarketing |
| ¥3–5 per entry | General lists already filtered by industry and region. Update frequency depends on the provider | Ordinary DM and fax DM |
| ¥8–15 per entry | Frequently updated, with fields such as capital, number of employees and annual sales | Targeted proposal sales |
| ¥20+ per entry | Researched lists built for each project. Small lots possible | New-customer development where accuracy matters |
"Cheaper is better" may look true, but with fax DM and postal DM, unless you think in cost per delivered piece rather than unit price, it ends up costing more. The next section explains why.
What is going on inside "cheap lists"
The lower the unit price, the more likely the following get mixed in.
- Closed and relocated businesses remain — the fate of a database that isn't updated
- Blank fax numbers — even with a company name and address, without a fax number the entry is useless for fax DM
- Duplicate branches and sales offices — the same company receives several copies, which makes a bad impression
- Industry classification doesn't match reality — the registered industry and the business actually carried out don't always match
- It doesn't reach the decision-maker — only the main contact, never passed on to the relevant department
If only 600 of 1,000 entries are actually usable, even a ¥1 list really costs about ¥1.7 per entry. On top of that, with fax DM the sending fees for undelivered faxes are wasted too. With cheap lists you tend to "buy cheap and pay again in sending fees."
Is building your own really cheaper? (Converting to an hourly rate)
It is tempting to think "if I collect it myself with free tools, it's free," but converting time into unit cost changes the picture.
| Job | Approx. per entry | Per 100 entries |
|---|---|---|
| Search for candidates | 20–40 sec | About 1 hour |
| Copy addresses and fax numbers from websites | 30–60 sec | About 1–1.7 hours |
| Check for duplicates and closures | 10–20 sec | About 0.5 hours |
| Total (100 entries) | About 2–3 hours | |
At ¥2,000 an hour, 100 entries cost ¥4,000–6,000, or ¥40–60 per entry. Using the National Tax Agency's Corporate Number Publication Site or phone directory sites, you can collect company names and addresses for free, but collecting fax numbers and checking what a business really does are hard to automate, and that is where all the time goes..
How to choose: decide by volume and accuracy
| What you want to do | Best option |
|---|---|
| Reach tens of thousands, no matter what | Cheap ready-made list (¥0.1–1 range) |
| Narrow thousands down by industry and region | General list (¥3–5 range) |
| Reach a few hundred with accuracy | Researched list (built by research) |
| 100 or fewer / special conditions | Researched list, or build your own |
The rule of thumb is simple: the bigger the gross profit from one order, the more it pays to spend on the list. For a product with ¥50,000 gross profit, even if the list costs ¥10 more per entry, the difference over 300 entries is only ¥3,000.
A third option: researched lists
Nojima Giken Marketing does not reuse ready-made lists; instead we research and build a target list for each project. We narrow down from every industry in the Japan Standard Industrial Classification by prefecture, size, annual sales and more, from ¥20 per entry. For fax DM, we deliver only entries that have a fax number. We handle corporate information only — never personal information such as individuals' names, home addresses or personal phone numbers. Minimum lot sizes are negotiable.
